Email Newsletters
An email newsletter is cost effective way of quickly reaching your target audience with news, special offers and other essential information. Many of us already receive email newsletters on a regular basis and already appreciate the value of these communications.
A n email newsletter provides:
* High speed communications with virtually unlimited recipients * A very low cost per recipient (no envelopes, stamps etc.) * Quick turnaround (no printing or proofing delays) * Options for recipients to subscribe/unsubscribe * Integration to your web site i.e. “click the link for more info”
Email newsletters may be sent from Outlook/Outlook Express (and many other email programs) to your existing email contacts. Alternatively for larger volumes, server based mailing can facilitate high speed delivery with the addition of facilities such as subscribe (from your web site!) and unsubscribe. Is this not spam?
An electronic message is "spam" IF: (1) the recipient's personal identity and context are irrelevant because the message is equally applicable to many other potential recipients; AND (2) the recipient has not verifiably granted deliberate, explicit, and still-revocable permission for it to be sent; AND (3) the transmission and reception of the message appears to the recipient to give a disproportionate benefit to the sender. - http://mail-abuse.org/standard.html
If you use email newsletters to communicate with staff, clients, prospective clients and associates then you are not sending Spam. As long as you offer a method of opting out then you are well within the set guidelines.
Email newsletters should only be used for communicating with existing contacts and new requesting subscribers. The main reason why there is such a big Spam problem is that unscrupulous organisations ‘harvest’ email addresses and then bomb them with everything. If you target properly you will always obtain a higher success rate!
